OSHA Code Enables 12‑Hour Shift, Boosts Semiconductor Jobs

The Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions (OSHC) Code 2020, which became effective nationwide on November 21, 2025, grants state governments discretion to relax certain safety provisions for factories under strict conditions. Gujarat exercised this authority to permit Micron Semiconductor Technology India Private Limited to run a 12‑hour daily shift at its Sanand plant, while keeping the weekly work limit at 48 hours.

According to the code, factories must obtain explicit government approval before extending daily work hours, and employee consent is mandatory. The policy aims to reduce shift handovers in clean‑room settings, enhance equipment utilisation and sustain continuous production – essential for high‑precision semiconductor manufacturing.

The Sanand site will house more than 500,000 sq ft of clean‑room space, including one of the largest single‑floor semiconductor assembly and test facilities globally. Production is expected to commence in 2026, with an anticipated ramp‑up to several hundred million chips per year by 2027, creating thousands of skilled jobs in the region.
