Oil Crude Prices Top $100 as Markets Await Fed Decision

Crude oil benchmarks have surged above the $100 per barrel threshold, a level not seen in recent months. Brent settled at $104.47, while West Texas Intermediate hovered just under $100 at $99.99. The price rally adds a fresh layer of uncertainty for investors monitoring input‑cost dynamics.

The timing coincides with the Federal Reserve’s upcoming policy meeting on September 15‑16, where officials will assess whether to adjust interest rates amid stubborn inflation and high bond yields. Market participants expect the Fed’s decision to reverberate through equity markets worldwide, including India.

Domestically, a series of economic indicators—wholesale and retail inflation, trade figures, passenger vehicle sales, unemployment rates, and foreign exchange reserves—are slated for release next week. These numbers will help gauge the economy’s trajectory and could amplify market reactions to the Fed’s stance.

Last week’s trading session saw the Sensex tumble 2.27% to 74,781.76 and the Nifty slide 2.09% to 23,398.10, with broad weakness across large‑cap, mid‑cap, and small‑cap segments. Sectoral losers included Nifty Real Estate and Nifty IT, which posted double‑digit percentage declines.
