New Cabinet Green Energy Plan Targets 135 GW Solar & Wind, 50 GWh Storage

In a significant policy move, the Indian cabinet approved the Green Energy Corridor Phase‑III (GEC‑III) on Wednesday, a scheme designed to deliver 135 GW of renewable power and 50 GWh of battery storage by the end of FY 2032‑33. Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted that the initiative will accelerate the nation’s journey toward a 900 GW non‑fossil electricity target for 2035, while also fostering a surge in quality jobs across the power sector.

The plan outlines a comprehensive upgrade of transmission networks across all states and union territories, enabling smooth integration of the new renewable capacity into the national grid. It also earmarks a dedicated 50 GWh of grid‑scale battery storage to address the intermittency of solar and wind generation, reduce grid stress, and meet peak‑hour demand more efficiently.

The total outlay for GEC‑III exceeds ₹1.86 lakh crore, with ₹1.36 lakh crore slated for transmission infrastructure and ₹5 0000 crore for the installation of battery energy storage systems. The central government will provide a fiscal grant of ₹54 082 crore to support the project.

India’s power landscape has expanded dramatically, with installed capacity rising from roughly 249 GW in 2014 to 552 GW by July 2026. Non‑fossil sources now account for over 300 GW, or more than 54 percent of the total, driven largely by a solar surge to 164.6 GW. In 2025, India emerged as the world’s second‑largest market for solar additions, adding more than 37 GW of new capacity.

The Prime Minister also used his X platform to assure farmers that the government will not compromise on their earnings, confirming an uplift in the Minimum Support Price for Rabi crops in the 2027‑28 marketing season, which will benefit millions of cultivators.

By the projected 2032‑33 deadline, GEC‑III is expected to have laid the foundation for a resilient, low‑carbon power system and created thousands of skilled jobs across manufacturing, construction and energy‑storage domains.
