Mid‑cap and small‑cap stocks outperform as investors eye Fed outlook

Mumbai, September 17 — The trading day saw mid‑cap and small‑cap indices deliver the strongest performance, gaining 0.92% and 0.76% respectively, as market participants kept a close watch on the Federal Reserve's policy signals.

The benchmark Sensex closed at 74,314.59, down 21.86 points (0.03%), while the Nifty 50 rose to 23,270.60, up 53 points (0.23%). Both indices reflected a balance between global macro‑economic cues and domestic sectoral trends.

Opening levels saw the Sensex at 74,182.62 and the Nifty at 23,195.25, each registering modest declines before rallying to intraday highs of 74,677.56 and 23,363.55 respectively.

Sectoral leaders included Nifty Realty, Nifty Auto and Nifty Metal, which posted notable advances. In contrast, Nifty Bank, Nifty PSU Bank and Nifty Private Bank lagged behind, posting the widest percentage drops.

Equity gainers were led by HDFC Life, which jumped 5.05%. Other significant contributors were Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, SBI Life, Dr. Reddy's Laboratories, BEL, Indigo and Tata Steel. The losing side featured ONGC, Titan, HDFC Bank, Hindustan Unilever, Coal India and Nestle India.

Commentary from market experts highlighted that the Fed’s possible rate‑hike trajectory, coupled with a softening bond yield curve, provided short‑term support to global equity markets. At the same time, declining inflation expectations added to the optimism. Yet, the lingering uncertainty from Middle‑East tensions and potential U.S. tariff escalations may keep investors in a defensive posture.

Investors showed a clear preference for companies with solid earnings outlooks, strong order books and healthy balance sheets, particularly in capital goods, industrial, defence, power and healthcare sectors, driving the outperformance of mid‑cap and small‑cap stocks.
