Long-Term Fuel Supplies Secured for Mauritius Under New Partnership

India and Mauritius have locked in a long‑term fuel supply framework that will see the Indian side deliver essential petroleum products to the island for years to come. The deal was announced on August 23 after Minister Hardeep Singh Puri met with Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth at the Indian High Commission in Port Louis.

The partnership includes the provision of petrol, diesel, marine gas oil and aviation turbine fuel, covering the critical needs of Mauritius’ transport, shipping and aviation sectors. By establishing a guaranteed pipeline of supplies, the agreement aims to shield the Mauritian economy from the volatility of international fuel markets and strengthen its overall energy resilience.

Both parties stressed that the arrangement is part of a broader strategy to support Mauritius’ energy transition, with India offering technical assistance and investment in cleaner technologies. The MoU also opens avenues for future collaboration on renewable projects, storage infrastructure and capacity building.

The minister’s official visit, which ran from August 20 to 22, followed a previous diplomatic event where Mauritian President Prithvirajsing Roopun attended India’s 80th Independence Day celebrations, highlighting the ongoing friendship and shared milestones such as a $68 million special economic package, a new renal‑transplant facility, and the delivery of 100 electric buses.
