Legal expert cautions that halting Tata Trust operations could breach democratic norms
Abhishek Manu Singhi, representing Tata Trusts, expressed deep disappointment over a sudden order issued by the Charity Commissioner that blocks the trust from conducting its routine meetings.
The order, Singhi argued, effectively paralyzes the trust’s decision‑making mechanism and undermines the democratic governance that the trust has practiced for more than a century.
He warned that such interference could set a precedent for other charitable entities, threatening the balance between private ownership and public oversight in the Indian corporate landscape.
Singhi also reiterated that any effort to marginalise the rights of owners‑shareholders within Tata Sons would jeopardise the governance model that underpins thousands of Indian enterprises.
