Lakshadweep Designated as Seaweed Cluster Hub Under New Aquaculture Mission

In line with the objectives of Mission Colourful Fish 2031, Lakshadweep has been announced as a dedicated seaweed cluster. The designation aims to boost seaweed farming, processing and market integration on the islands, leveraging their favorable marine conditions.

Seaweed cultivation is expected to complement ornamental fish farming by providing sustainable feed and creating additional income streams for local communities. The cluster model will bring together research institutions, private players and government agencies to develop technology‑driven solutions.

The islands’ rich biodiversity, including a range of marine ornamental fish species, offers a dual advantage of enhancing ecosystem resilience while opening high‑value export avenues.

Authorities anticipate that the cluster will generate employment, improve coastal livelihoods and contribute to India’s goal of becoming a leading exporter of marine products.
