Indian jewellery sector posts strong export growth in September

New Delhi – In September 2026, India’s gem and jewellery exports rose by 9.43 percent, reaching US$2.95 billion, compared with US$2.69 billion during the same month in the previous year, a trade update disclosed on Thursday.

Data from Kama Jewellery indicate that cumulative exports for the April‑September period grew 3.07 percent to US$14.30 billion, surpassing the US$13.87 billion logged in the equivalent half‑year of 2025.

The import side showed a 5.29 percent year‑on‑year increase in gross imports for the first six months of the fiscal year, totaling US$11.04 billion, while September alone recorded a 25.48 percent jump to US$2.07 billion.

The publication notes that the improvement is encouraging for an industry that has been grappling with persistent global economic pressures. Domestic festival demand and the international holiday shopping window have both contributed to the positive momentum.

Diamond export values have dipped, yet the shipment volume has risen, indicating lower per‑carat pricing rather than a weakening in demand. The rise in raw diamond imports underlines India’s pivotal role as the world’s foremost diamond‑processing hub.

Gold jewellery performance was uneven: higher gold spot prices dampened sales of simple gold pieces, whereas exports of gold‑alloy jewellery—featuring elaborate designs and value‑added features—registered a pronounced increase, mirroring buyer appetite for premium, design‑centric items.

Given the approaching festive and matrimonial season, the report anticipates a further acceleration of trade, with expectations of additional export growth in the ongoing quarter.
