IT Stocks Power Indian Bourses as Sensex Hits 78,152
Mumbai, July 3 – A surge in information‑technology shares lifted Indian equities on Friday, sending the Sensex to 78,152.34, a rise of 650.22 points (0.84 percent). The Nifty also moved up 199.95 points, or 0.83 percent, to end at 24,375.65.
The Nifty IT index posted an impressive near‑2 percent gain, making it the day’s top gainer. Other sector indices – metals, pharma, healthcare, commodities, realty, FMCG, media, defence, services and financial services – also recorded positive closes. Only the PSU Bank and Energy indices fell short.
Among the Sensex constituents, the biggest winners were HCL Tech, Tech Mahindra, Tata Steel, TCS, Bajaj Finserv, Infosys, BEL, Bharti Airtel, UltraTech Cement, Trent, Hindustan Unilever, ICICI Bank, Maruti Suzuki, HDFC Bank, L&T, Eternl and Bajaj Finance. The laggards included Indigo, Axis Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, State Bank of India, M&M and NTPC.
Regional markets were largely on an upswing, with Tokyo, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Seoul and Jakarta posting gains. The U.S. markets closed mixed on Thursday, with the Dow up 1.14 percent and the Nasdaq technology index slipping 0.80 percent. Analysts highlighted that a decline in foreign institutional selling, combined with lower oil prices near pre‑war levels, gave the Indian market a solid push.
