Indian stock market July surge: Sensex, Nifty up 2% with IT as star
Mumbai, August 1 – July delivered a buoyant performance for India’s equity markets. The Sensex rose 0.21 percent to close at 78,094.64 and the Nifty climbed 0.27 percent to end at 24,383.60, translating into monthly gains of more than two percent for both benchmarks.
The rally extended beyond large‑cap stocks. The Nifty Small‑Cap 100 index appreciated by 2.53 percent, while the Nifty Mid‑Cap 100 posted a 1.81 percent increase during the same period.
A few securities faced steep declines, slipping between 15 and 20 percent in market value. These included Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, Bandhan Bank, Thermax, Tejas Networks, Suzlon Energy, GE Vernova T&D India, Siemens Energy India and Gujarat Energy.
In contrast, several stocks experienced explosive upside. Kalyan Jewellers surged over 60 percent. E‑Clerks Services, CE Info Systems, Lodha Developers, Heggade Enterprises, Info Edge (India), ATM, HCL Technologies and Persistent Systems each rallied around the 50‑percent mark.
Sector analysis showed Nifty IT as the clear winner, jumping 16.77 percent. It was followed by Nifty Consumer Durables (9.96 percent), Nifty Media (9.49 percent), Nifty Realty (8.67 percent), Nifty Auto (8.55 percent), Nifty Pharma (4.77 percent), Nifty Services (2.50 percent) and Nifty Metal (1.60 percent). The laggards were Nifty Energy (down 2.54 percent), Nifty India Defence (down 1.98 percent), Nifty PSU Bank (down 1.48 percent) and Nifty Private Bank (down 1.46 percent).
Market observers attribute the IT sector’s stellar performance to robust first‑quarter earnings and renewed buying interest, even as global AI‑driven trading pressures persisted. The sector’s momentum helped anchor the broader market’s positive trajectory throughout July.
