India warns against misuse of WTO rules for protectionist measures

In the same G20 gathering, the Indian minister acknowledged the concerns of several member states that certain subsidies and support measures could distort trade, leading to dumping and unfair pricing.

Goyal affirmed that such issues should be addressed through WTO‑compliant tools, including evidence‑based anti‑dumping and countervailing duties that are subject to judicial review.

He warned that while industrial capacity itself is not a problem, distortions may arise when production is geographically concentrated and backed by hidden subsidies. Diversifying production and supply chains is legitimate, but it must not be used as a pretext to bypass WTO rules or shift adjustment burdens onto developing nations.

The minister also called for data and statistical exchanges to remain within existing multilateral mechanisms.
