India Plans Major Push for Coal Gasification With Rs 37,500 Cr Outlay

The Union government is organizing a dedicated roadshow to promote surface coal and lignite gasification projects, marking a decisive step toward sustainable utilization of India’s mineral wealth. Scheduled for Thursday in New Delhi, the event will showcase a Rs 37,500 crore scheme designed to meet the national target of gasifying 100 million tonnes of coal by 2030. The Ministry of Coal has emphasized that gasification offers a cleaner route to extract value from abundant domestic reserves, thereby curbing reliance on imported LNG, urea, ammonia, and methanol. Key stakeholders including state officials, investors, and technology suppliers are expected to converge for strategic discussions on project development and financing. Central ministers G. Kishan Reddy and Satish Chandra Dubey will attend alongside senior ministry officials. Projections indicate that the scheme could attract Rs 2.5-3 lakh crore in investments, generating nearly 50,000 jobs and Rs 6,300 crore in yearly revenue from 75 million tonnes of feedstock. The initiative also promises additional fiscal gains through GST collections. By fostering an integrated gasification ecosystem, the government aims to enhance energy security, create employment in coal belts, and position India competitively in the global clean-coal technology landscape.
