India Leads Global Green Hydrogen Supply Commitments in 2026

New Delhi, October 29: India has overtaken all other countries in green hydrogen supply commitments, government data showed on Thursday. Total offtake agreements by Indian companies now exceed 5,55,610 metric tonnes per annum (MTPA) as of October 2026.

New and Renewable Energy Minister Pralhad Joshi said Indian firms have won 23 major supply contracts, which together involve commitments of over 5.5 lakh metric tonnes a year. More than 70 per cent of that volume is designated for global exports.

The minister said these deals have brought Rs 90,000 crore of investment into the clean energy sector. He added that the progress advances India's goal of leading the world on net-zero emissions and creates green jobs.

During 2026, Indian companies signed 18 new offtake agreements to supply more than 4 lakh MTPA of green hydrogen equivalent.

An official statement said Indian suppliers are offering the most competitive prices in the world for green ammonia and green methanol. This strengthens India's leading position in Europe and Japan.

Green ammonia is emerging as a clean fuel for ship bunkering. Thermal power plants are also using it blended with other fuels to reduce emissions.

Worldwide, fertiliser production and refining sectors are rapidly adopting products made from green hydrogen. The goal is to reduce carbon emissions across industry.

Indian companies have built key strategic partnerships in major markets and signed binding supply deals.

Among the major contracts, ACME Group has agreed with Japan's IHI to supply 4,88,000 MTPA of green ammonia. It has also agreed to supply 1,00,000 MTPA of green methanol to Mitsubishi Gas Chemical.

L&T and Itochu have created a special purpose vehicle to supply 3,00,000 tonnes a year of green ammonia, starting from December 2029.

Reliance Industries Limited has entered a long-term supply and purchase agreement worth over 3 billion dollars with Samsung C&T Corporation of South Korea. It is one of the largest green ammonia offtake contracts globally, with supplies expected from 2028.

Agastya's Sri Lankan unit SAR is in the process of an offtake agreement for 2,50,000 MTPA of green methanol.

AM Green has also signed three agreements. It was chosen as the sole Asian category winner in Hintco's H2Global auction. Hintco will purchase at least 58.5 million euros of ammonia over 10 years, with first supplies to Germany expected in 2029. The company also has a firm deal with Germany's Uniper for 2,50,000 MTPA of green ammonia and a binding agreement with Japan's JERA for 70,000 MTPA.

Juno Jules has signed an offtake agreement with Select Energy GmbH for 600 tonnes per day, about 2,19,000 MTPA, of green ammonia.

Domestic demand has also grown under government schemes. Eleven fertiliser units across the country have signed agreements for 6,70,000 MTPA of green ammonia under the SIGHT programme.

The statement added that refineries of Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum, Hindustan Petroleum and Numaligarh Refinery have been allocated projects under SIGHT to produce and supply 30,000 MTPA of green hydrogen.
