In a significant boost to bilateral development cooperation, NITI Aayog and JICA signed the Record of Discussions for the second phase of their joint initiative on Sustainable Development Goals on Monday in New Delhi. The project targets aspirational districts and blocks, aiming to transform these challenging regions through targeted interventions.
The signing was attended by key figures including Rohit Kumar from NITI Aayog and JICA India’s Chief Representative Takeuchi Takuro. This move reaffirms the robust India-Japan partnership, channeling joint efforts to meet SDGs in priority underdeveloped areas.
Speaking on the occasion, Kumar noted the synergy of institutional capabilities, knowledge sharing, and practical insights aimed at inclusive growth. The programme under Aspirational Districts Programme (ADP) and Aspirational Blocks Programme (ABP) covers six critical sectors: global partnerships, health & nutrition, education, agriculture & water, financial inclusion & skills, and infrastructure.
Efforts will concentrate on building capacities, refining monitoring systems, and localizing SDGs effectively. Highlights include exchange programs, knowledge forums between Japan and India, best practice sharing, and direct assistance to selected districts and blocks.
Takeuchi commended the excellence of India’s grassroots monitoring frameworks and described the project as a win-win collaboration. As Phase II unfolds, it promises to elevate development outcomes, bridging gaps in underserved communities and exemplifying successful North-South cooperation in the global SDG agenda.
