Heat Wave and Low Wind Force Emergency Power Procurement in Tamil Nadu

An extended heat wave has driven up the use of air conditioners, fans, and other cooling devices in homes, commercial spaces, and offices throughout Tamil Nadu. Simultaneously, wind speeds have fallen, curbing the output of wind farms that normally supply a significant share of the state’s power.

The dual pressure has resulted in voltage fluctuations in parts of the distribution network and sparked complaints of sudden power cuts. In response, the state’s electricity ministry ordered the immediate purchase of 2,000 MW from the open market to offset the shortfall.

The emergency power will be integrated into the grid within hours, helping to balance supply and demand while technical teams monitor the stability of voltage levels.

Authorities have pledged ongoing assessments of weather‑related impacts on generation and will act swiftly to avoid future disruptions.
