In a major push for eco-friendly commuting, Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL) has handed over two hydrogen fuel cell buses to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). This move is set to enhance clean public transport options in the national capital, addressing long-standing pollution challenges. The announcement came from IOCL's Director (Refinery), Arvind Kumar, during a media interaction on Friday. The buses will ply between Central Secretariat and Kartavya Bhawan, providing zero-emission rides to daily commuters. Kumar explained the technology's superiority: 'Powered by hydrogen produced at our Faridabad R&D center, these buses run on fuel cells that emit only water. It's a truly sustainable solution for urban transport.' Unlike diesel or CNG buses, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles produce no harmful pollutants, offering a cleaner alternative amid Delhi's worsening air quality. This pilot project is part of IOCL's broader strategy to expand green hydrogen infrastructure. The company is building a dedicated 10 KTA green hydrogen facility at Panipat Refinery, with construction underway. 'We're investing heavily in this technology to make it viable for mass transport,' Kumar noted. Drawing inspiration from PM Modi's call for clean energy adoption, IOCL aims to proliferate such initiatives. With 15 hydrogen buses already in testing across India, the firm is poised to lead the green mobility charge. This partnership not only demonstrates practical application of advanced tech but also paves the way for scalable, emission-free public transit. As India eyes a greener future, projects like this could transform how millions travel daily, reducing carbon footprints citywide.
