Government Debunks Textile Waste Dump Myth in India

In a strong rebuttal to overseas narratives, India's government has clarified that portraying the nation as a textile waste dumping site is misleading. The Textiles Ministry underscored the country's advanced recycling infrastructure, where 97 percent of pre-consumer waste from manufacturing finds new life. Foreign reports have spotlighted problems in areas like Panipat, but they've sidelined progress in compliance, innovation, and sustainability. India's network for textile recovery is among the largest globally, rooted in traditional reuse systems. Annual textile waste generation stands at 7,073 kilotons, with the 'Mapping of Textile Waste Value Chain in India 2026' study confirming near-total recycling of pre-consumer scraps. Dismissing claims of heavy reliance on Western fast-fashion discards, officials note that 90 percent-plus of the 7.8 million tons managed annually is homegrown, imports at a mere 7 percent. FICCI reports peg the sector's economic contribution at ₹22,000 crore yearly. An IIT Delhi study on Panipat demonstrates recycling's environmental edge: 40 percent lower GHG emissions and fossil fuel consumption versus new fibers. The ministry admits gaps in post-consumer handling, informal operations, and labor protections but points to industry evolution toward formality, green tech, and robust oversight.
