Festive season expenses climb as energy and electronics prices surge
As India steps into October, price spikes in several essential categories are creating a heavier financial load for households. The cost of a 19‑kg commercial LPG cylinder has risen by 62.50 rupees, reaching 2,810 rupees in Delhi and 2,764 rupees in Mumbai, with Patna seeing the biggest jump of 71.50 rupees.
Aviation turbine fuel (ATF) is now 16 rupees per litre more expensive, a change that could push airlines to raise ticket fares ahead of the Diwali, Dussehra and Chhath travel peaks.
The electronics market is also feeling the pinch as global copper, steel and aluminium price hikes force manufacturers to lift retail rates. Smart TVs, split ACs, refrigerators and washing machines are up 5%‑8%, translating into an additional cost of 1,200‑3,500 rupees per gadget.
Passport processing fees for ordinary applicants have been increased by approximately 1,000 rupees, inflating the expense of new passports and renewals. Together, these rises may tighten consumer budgets during the most active festive and wedding season of the year.
