E15+ and E20 fuels prove safe for millions of Indian vehicles

The ministry highlighted that E15+ fuel has been in use for more than three and a half years, while E19‑E20 blends have been available for over two and a half years. During this period, more than 20 million two‑wheelers and over 30 million petrol‑run cars have operated on these blends.

No verified case of large‑scale engine failure or vehicle damage linked to ethanol blending has been reported. Service records from major passenger‑car manufacturers and two‑wheeler makers show no unusual wear, corrosion or reduced vehicle lifespan attributable to E20.

A leading passenger‑car company serviced 2.84 crore vehicles in FY 2025‑26, including about 1.5 crore older models that were not E20‑certified, yet recorded no engine damage due to the blend. A top two‑wheeler maker reported similar findings based on its extensive service data.

Laboratory tests and field validation conducted by NITI Aayog, IOC, ARAI, IIP and SIAM confirm that E20 does not cause abnormal engine wear or technical incompatibility.
