Direct Tax Collections Hit Record Highs as CBDT Extends Deadlines

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has announced an extension of critical filing dates for taxpayers undergoing a tax audit under the Income Tax Act, 1961. For the assessment year 2026-27, the Income Tax Return (ITR) filing deadline moves from 31 October to 21 November 2026, and the tax audit report submission date shifts from 30 September to 21 October 2026. A separate formal notification will outline the revised schedule.

The decision responds to calls from chartered accountant bodies and tax specialists who highlighted the need for additional time to complete audit procedures, align financial and tax records, and verify disclosures. The CBDT expects the extra period to help both taxpayers and auditors meet their obligations on the e‑filing portal without haste.

In parallel, the government reported a strong upturn in direct tax receipts for the current fiscal year. Net direct tax collection rose 13 % to over ₹12.12 lakh crore as of 17 September, while gross direct tax collection increased by more than 15 % to ₹14.3 lakh crore. Corporate tax revenue surged 19.48 % to roughly ₹5.56 lakh crore, and personal income tax plus Hindu Undivided Family (HUF) collections grew 6 % to exceed ₹6.16 lakh crore.

Securities Transaction Tax (STT) saw a remarkable 53 % jump, reaching ₹40,214 crore, and tax refunds disbursed between 1 April and 17 September rose by over 29 % to cross ₹2.2 lakh crore. The CBDT’s deadline extension is aimed at easing compliance burdens and supporting the ease‑of‑doing‑business agenda.
