Digital rupee to settle tokenised securities in first Indian pilot

India’s inaugural tokenised securities pilot will see the digital rupee—India’s Central Bank Digital Currency—used as the settlement medium for corporate bonds. The launch, conducted at the Global Fintech Fest 2026, marks a historic step toward a fully digital financial market infrastructure.

The pilot leverages blockchain to issue, trade and settle tokenised bonds, with the digital rupee acting as the final currency for all transactions. This design eliminates the traditional clearing house bottleneck, promising near‑instant settlement and lower operational costs.

RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra underscored that the initiative builds on the country’s extensive digital finance base, which includes over 570 million Jan Dhan accounts and billions of daily UPI transactions. He remarked that the digital rupee’s integration with blockchain showcases India’s commitment to pioneering secure and efficient payment solutions.

Regulators also outlined a phased expansion strategy. After the corporate bond pilot, the system could be adapted for other asset categories such as shares, mutual fund units and electronic gold receipts, paving the way for a comprehensive tokenised market.

Stakeholders were reminded that while technology can accelerate market operations, maintaining trust through robust security protocols and transparent governance remains essential. The digital rupee’s role in this pilot is a test of both technological capability and public confidence in new forms of digital money.
