Debt funds drive massive outflow as September sees Rs 1.83 lakh crore withdrawal

September’s mutual fund landscape was marked by a pronounced outflow from debt‑oriented schemes. Fixed‑income funds recorded redemptions totalling Rs 1.83 lakh crore, a stark increase from the Rs 8,127 crore outflow observed in August.

The surge in debt‑fund withdrawals contributed to a net industry outflow of Rs 1.33 lakh crore for the month, reversing August’s net inflow of Rs 41,353 crore. While equity mutual funds enjoyed a net inflow of Rs 38,307 crore, the pressure from debt‑fund redemptions outweighed the gains, pulling total Assets Under Management (AUM) down to Rs 82.64 lakh crore at month‑end.

Analysts attribute the heightened debt‑fund exodus to rising interest‑rate expectations and a shift among investors toward equity exposure via systematic investment plans (SIPs). SIPs alone amassed a record Rs 32,490 crore in September, indicating a strategic reallocation of capital.

Category‑wise, the impact was uneven. Large‑cap funds saw a modest inflow of Rs 859 crore, reversing an August outflow of Rs 1,147 crore, while multi‑asset allocation funds remained largely unchanged at Rs 3,667 crore. The outflow dynamics underscore a broader market sentiment where investors prioritize growth‑oriented assets over the relative safety of fixed‑income products.

The data suggest that while equity appetite remains robust, debt‑funds continue to experience pressure as investors navigate a volatile macro‑economic environment.
