Council Defers Annual Property Tax Rise Amid Revaluation Dispute

Following complaints from residents about a perceived increase in property tax, the council led by Deputy Mayor Magesh Kumar announced a postponement of the scheduled annual rise.

The decision was taken to avoid placing an extra financial burden on citizens while the municipal corporation completes its revaluation exercise. In its previous meeting, the council urged the state government to allocate a special ₹2,000 crore grant instead of enforcing the hike.

Magesh Kumar claimed that the revaluation process was carried out without informing the council, but officials responded that it was essential to address long‑standing disparities in tax payments for similarly sized properties.

The corporation expects the new assessment to generate roughly ₹170 crore in additional revenue each year, but it stresses that the move targets only those properties that were previously under‑taxed, not a city‑wide tax increase.
