Capital goods and construction drive India's August industrial surge
India's industrial production rose eight percent in August on an annual basis, the latest figures from the Ministry of Statistics show. The manufacturing sector, which makes up the bulk of the Index of Industrial Production, recorded a 9% increase, marking the third consecutive month of strong performance.
Among the manufacturing groups, motor vehicle production jumped 25.2%, electrical equipment surged 30.9%, and machinery and equipment rose 25.3%, together accounting for the majority of the sector’s growth.
Energy utilities contributed a 12.3% rise in electricity and gas supply, while water, sewerage and waste management services grew 6.3%. Mining contracted by 5.6%.
Capital goods output—reflecting factory‑level machinery production—expanded an impressive 16.9%, signaling robust real investment. Consumer durables such as electronic devices, refrigerators and televisions grew 11.1%, highlighting rising consumer demand, while non‑durable items like soaps and cosmetics increased modestly by 2.1%.
Infrastructure and construction goods saw a 6.4% gain, driven by government spending on highways, ports and rail projects, which are expected to create significant employment and lift overall economic growth.
