Banks Recover Rs 4.32 Lakh Crore via IBC Resolution Plans

India’s insolvency regime has delivered strong results for lenders, with banks recovering approximately Rs 4.32 lakh crore through resolution plans sanctioned under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code. The recoveries represent 116.85 percent of liquidation value and 94.56 percent of fair value, according to a government fact sheet released Thursday. The fact sheet highlights how the IBC, enacted in 2016, has modernized India’s approach to handling corporate distress. It has created a more predictable and efficient system that benefits both creditors and viable businesses seeking revival. By March 2026, a total of 8,987 CIRPs had been admitted, with 1,419 cases resolved through approved plans. Additional cases were closed via settlements, appeals, and withdrawals under Section 12A, reflecting the Code’s flexibility. The RBI’s banking trends report for 2024-25 shows that the IBC alone accounted for Rs 54,528 crore of the Rs 1,04,099 crore recovered by scheduled commercial banks—more than half of total recoveries and significantly higher than amounts recovered through SARFAESI or debt recovery tribunals. Research from IIM Ahmedabad reveals that resolved companies experienced substantial post-resolution improvements, including a 76 percent sales increase and 50 percent growth in employee expenses, indicating job creation. Their market value surged from Rs 2 lakh crore to Rs 6 lakh crore. IIM Bangalore’s findings show a 3 percent reduction in cost of debt and better corporate governance through increased independent directors. These outcomes demonstrate how the IBC has enhanced recovery efficiency while supporting business revival and financial discipline.
