Auto and IT stocks lead broad sell‑off in India amid oil price surge
The latest spike in Brent crude, triggered by renewed hostilities in the Middle East, added fresh pressure on Indian stock markets. The Sensex closed 374 points lower at 76,570.35, while the Nifty slipped 141 points to 23,914.45.
The sell‑off was led by the auto and information‑technology sectors. Nifty Auto recorded a 1.79% decline, Nifty Media fell 1.75% and Nifty IT dropped 1.25%. Manufacturing, services and financial services indices also posted losses ranging between 0.6% and 0.8%.
Mid‑cap and small‑cap indices mirrored the trend, with the Nifty Mid‑Cap 100 down 0.53% and the Nifty Small‑Cap 100 down 0.37%.
Energy‑related indices bucked the trend, with Nifty Energy gaining 0.59% and Nifty Commodities rising 0.54%.
Among individual stocks, Adani Ports, Bajaj Finserv, Power Grid, NTPC, Titan, Trident and Sun Pharma were among the day's top gainers, while Asian Paints, M&M, HDFC Bank, HCL Technologies, Infosys, SBI and Tata Steel were the biggest decliners.
