Air India Takes Zero-Tolerance Action After Crew Member Tests Positive for Narcotic

Following an AAIB report that identified a psycho‑active substance in the pilot‑in‑command’s blood, Air India enforced its zero‑tolerance policy on August 4’s Phuket‑Delhi operation.

The report detailed that the PIC’s sample tested non‑negative for a narcotic, while the co‑pilot’s sample was negative on both the initial and confirmatory tests. Both crew members underwent standard medical screening after the flight, and their breathalyzer results were satisfactory.

Air India’s statement on the X social platform stressed that safety, fitness, and adherence to regulations are paramount. As a result, the airline terminated the PIC’s contract effective immediately and urged the DGCA to impose appropriate sanctions.

Flight AI‑2379 was carrying 145 individuals—137 passengers, six cabin crew members, and two pilots. The incident left at least 20 passengers and four crew members with injuries.
