Her journey from a young Christian singer to a beloved television host is nothing short of inspiring. With her captivating presence, she has touched the hearts of millions throughout her career.

Who Is Kathie Lee Gifford?

Kathie Lee Gifford spent several years pursuing a career as a Christian singer. She was invited to Good Morning America when a producer heard her host an A.M. radio show. She joined Regis Philbin on The Morning Show in 1985, and the duo became an instant hit for their banter and chemistry. She co-hosted the fourth hour of Today show with Hoda Kotb for more than a decade, solidifying her place as a prominent figure in daytime television.

Early Life

Kathryn Lee Epstein was born on August 16, 1953, in Paris, France. Her father, Aaron Leon Epstein, was an American naval officer and weekend jazz saxophonist, while her mother, Joan, was a former naval secretary turned radio singer. Growing up in a musical household, Kathie Lee was influenced by her parents' love for music, which played a significant role in shaping her future career.

She and her two siblings, David and Michelle, spent their early years in various European countries where their father was stationed. The family returned to the United States in 1957 and eventually settled in Bowie, Maryland. There, Aaron Epstein transitioned to working as a newspaper distributor and insurance agent, and later, he and his wife became proprietors of a resort hotel.

While Kathie Lee had a culturally Jewish upbringing, she attended Methodist Sunday school and became a born-again Christian at the age of 12 after watching a Christian film titled The Restless Ones. This pivotal moment marked the beginning of her journey in music and entertainment, as she sought to express her faith through song.

Christian Singer

At just 17, Gifford won her state Junior Miss pageant and traveled to Mobile, Alabama, to represent Maryland in the nationwide competition. There, she met Anita Bryant, a well-known Christian singer and co-host of the pageant. Recognizing Gifford's potential, Bryant invited her to live and work with her and her husband in Key Biscayne, Florida. While this experience was meant to boost Kathie Lee's career, it turned out to be a disillusioning year where she realized the couple's marriage was merely a front.

Despite the challenges, Bryant secured a full scholarship for Gifford at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where she joined Roberts' World Action Singers. Beginning in 1972, Gifford performed on Oral Roberts' television show and traveled throughout the Bible Belt, but she grew disenchanted with the behind-the-scenes manipulation and dropped out during her junior year.

In a quest for personal growth, Gifford used her remaining scholarship funds to rent an apartment in Tulsa. She spent weeks reflecting on her spiritual journey, ultimately publishing her thoughts in a book titled The Quiet Riot in 1976. That same year, she married Paul Johnson, her Bible study group leader. Although the marriage lasted only six years, it was professionally fruitful, with Gifford releasing several gospel albums during that time.

Live With Regis & Kathie Lee

As she pursued a more secular career, Gifford worked on various projects, including a role as Nurse Callahan on the soap opera Days of Our Lives. Her exposure to different facets of the entertainment industry led to opportunities in commercial jingles and TV pilots. From 1977-78, she was the featured singer on Name That Tune, showcasing her talent and charm.

In 1981, Gifford filled in as host for Regis Philbin on a radio show, which caught the attention of Good Morning America's executive producer. This led to her eventual move to New York City, where she began appearing on the nationally televised morning show. Her infectious personality and energy quickly garnered attention, leading to an invitation from Philbin to join him as co-host on The Morning Show.

When Gifford joined Philbin in June 1985, their chemistry was undeniable. Their playful banter and genuine friendship brought a fresh dynamic to daytime TV. Within months, The Morning Show became a top-rated program, and in 1988, it was nationally syndicated as Live With Regis & Kathie Lee, making Gifford a household name.

Controversies and Personal Life

On October 18, 1986, Gifford married Frank Gifford, a former NFL star and sports broadcaster. The couple welcomed two children, Cody Newton and Cassidy Erin, into their family. However, Gifford's life was not without its challenges. In 1996, reports surfaced about child laborers producing her clothing line for Walmart, leading her to advocate for stronger labor laws and transparency in production practices.

Despite her efforts to uphold her brand's reputation, Gifford faced public scrutiny and ridicule for her association with the controversy. The following year, her marriage faced a public scandal when The Globe published compromising photographs of Frank Gifford with a flight attendant. Although the revelation caused significant personal turmoil, she chose to stand by her husband, further complicating her public image.

Over the years, Kathie Lee became known for her candidness about her family life, which endeared her to fans but also attracted criticism. The scrutiny forced her to become more guarded about her personal matters. In February 2000, she announced her departure from Live With Regis & Kathie Lee after 11 successful years, citing her desire to focus on her family and musical endeavors.

Other Projects and Albums

After leaving her daily television role, Gifford expanded her career by becoming a spokeswoman for several brands, including the Home Furnishings Council and Revlon. She also produced a fitness video titled Kathie Lee's Feel Fit and Fabulous Workout and authored an autobiography, I Can't Believe I Said That!, in 1992. Her charitable work and musical performances continued to resonate with fans across the country.

Following her exit from Live, Gifford released several albums, including The Heart of a Woman and Born for You, showcasing her versatility as an artist. She also recorded children's music with albums like Party Animals, further solidifying her status within the entertainment industry.

Return to Television on Today

In April 2008, Gifford joined Hoda Kotb as a co-anchor on the Today show, marking her return to morning television. The duo quickly became a favorite among viewers, sharing their experiences and insights while enjoying a glass of wine on set. Their chemistry and shared laughter brought a new energy to the show, reminiscent of Gifford's earlier work with Philbin.

Tragedy struck in August 2015 when Kathie Lee lost her husband, Frank Gifford. He had been a supportive presence in her life and career, often appearing alongside her during various segments on both Live and Today. Despite the personal loss, Gifford continued to thrive in her professional endeavors.

In December 2018, after celebrating a decade on Today, Gifford announced her decision to leave the show the following year. Her journey, filled with triumphs and challenges, serves as an inspiration to many, reminding us of the power of resilience and the importance of following our passions.
