We knew musician Navarone Garibaldi Garcia had a complicated relationship with his late half-sister, Lisa Marie Presley. However, it turns out they weren’t close at all. Garcia, the 36-year-old son of Priscilla Presley and producer Marco Garibaldi, has opened up about their sibling rift. The musician claimed in a recent interview that Lisa Marie’s alcohol use strained the bond between the famous siblings—so much that he wasn’t even invited to the private portion of her memorial service earlier this year.
Lisa Marie, the only daughter of Priscilla Presley and music icon Elvis Presley, died in January at age 54 after suffering cardiac arrest due to a small bowel obstruction. Here’s what Garcia has revealed about his relationship with Lisa Marie and why the two didn’t get along.
The Half-Siblings Did Not Grow Up Together
Garcia and Presley, who had an age gap of almost two decades, grew up in vastly different environments. Lisa Marie was born in February 1968 and moved to Los Angeles at age four following her parents’ divorce. She split time with her famous parents up until her father’s unexpected death in 1977 when she was just nine years old.
By the time Garcia was born in 1987, Lisa Marie had already dropped out of high school and met her eventual first husband, Danny Keough. Priscilla and Marco Garibaldi met in 1983 and were a couple until 2006, but Navarone was primarily raised by his mother. Garcia revealed he severed his relationship with his father in 2017.
While Lisa Marie grew up in the bright spotlight of her famous rock ’n’ roll dad and felt connected to his legacy, Navarone focused on making a name for himself as a musician. He moved away from his family at age 18 to pursue his career, eventually forming and becoming the vocalist for the synth rock band Them Guns.
Alcohol Use Strained Their Relationship
In February 2023, the New York Post reported that Garcia and Lisa Marie had experienced a “falling out” a couple of years ago, with a family friend saying that Garcia had made and deleted a “vile social media post” about his half-sister. However, Garcia has been more specific about their bad blood.
In an October 2023 interview with Aaron Smith-Levin, who hosts the Growing Up in Scientology YouTube channel, Garcia revealed that their strained relationship stemmed from Presley’s alcohol use. He mentioned that Presley was critical of his marijuana use growing up and even had her security team follow him during rare occasions when they were together.
Garcia stated that her drinking led to destructive behavior and interactions between them. “She would drink, and it kind of depended,” he noted. “She would look around the room and say, ‘Ehhhh, you!’ and then decide to tell you everything that’s wrong with you and your life.” He emphasized that Lisa Marie's drinking would lead her to say things that kept them from being close.
Reflections After Lisa Marie’s Death
It seems that Garcia and Presley could not mend their relationship in recent years. Shortly after Presley’s death, Garcia posted a tribute to his sister on Instagram, which included a photo of the two of them together when he was a toddler. While he expressed being “lost for words” after her passing, he also hinted that they weren’t on the best of terms.
Garcia shared, “I wish things had been different between us. Regardless, you are my sister, and I’m sending love and prayers for your journey home.” He attended Presley’s memorial service at the famed Graceland property but revealed to Smith-Levin that he wasn’t invited to the private friends and family portion of the ceremony, despite his close relationship with their mother, Priscilla.
Garcia stated, “We really didn’t get along. I think she knew I wouldn’t have gone even if she invited me.” This sentiment underscores the distance that had developed between the half-siblings over the years.
Garcia's Relationship with Riley Keough
Garcia is candid about his strained relationships with several family members, but he does maintain a close bond with his niece, Riley Keough. Despite not being close with his nephew Benjamin Keough, who died by suicide in July 2020, Garcia speaks warmly of Riley.
Riley, the star of the hit Amazon Prime series Daisy Jones & The Six, officially became the sole trustee of Lisa Marie’s estate in October, inheriting Graceland in the process. Garcia reportedly received a one-ninth share of the trust as part of a settlement agreement between Riley and his mother, Priscilla.
“Riley’s an angel that came from somewhere that had none of the narcissism, none of the antagonism. She’s literally like the sweetest, kindest most amazing human in the world,” Garcia expressed. “Out of my whole family, she’s pretty much the only one on my mom’s side I actually care about.”
