A malicious phishing campaign is sweeping social media, impersonating the State Bank of India’s popular YONO app. The scam message promises an easy Aadhaar update via a downloadable APK file but carries a sinister intent: stealing your personal and financial data.
Spotted and swiftly fact-checked by PIB Fact Check on platform X, the message warns that non-compliance will lock users out of their YONO accounts. This fear-mongering tactic is classic in cyber frauds, designed to prompt hasty actions without verification.
State Bank of India has not released any such update, confirms the official clarification. Downloading the APK could install harmful software, compromising devices and exposing Aadhaar numbers, bank details, and more to thieves.
In light of this, cybersecurity watchdogs urge restraint. Do not click links or install files from unknown sources, especially those received via WhatsApp or other messaging apps. Forward suspicious messages to the dedicated SBI phishing report email for investigation.
The surge in such attacks coincides with booming digital transactions through YONO and similar platforms. Fraudsters exploit the trust in established banking apps, crafting convincing lures that mimic official alerts. Recent reports highlight cases where victims lost entire savings to account takeovers.
To stay safe, rely solely on in-app notifications or SBI’s official portals for updates. Regularly review app permissions, use antivirus software, and report anomalies promptly. This proactive stance is key to outsmarting scammers in today’s connected world.
Financial regulators continue to push awareness drives, but individual caution remains the strongest defense against these pervasive threats.
