WhatsApp is set to revolutionize user interactions with upcoming usernames and unique IDs, prioritizing privacy by ditching phone number visibility. Users will seamlessly connect via messages, calls, and video without exposing personal details, according to recent reports pointing to a June 2026 global launch.
Like Instagram or X, everyday users and businesses will claim custom handles. The company shared its enthusiasm in a statement: ‘We’re excited about usernames on WhatsApp, letting users link up with friends, groups, and businesses sans phone number sharing.’
Opt-in by design, it preserves existing phone-based access while aiming to streamline onboarding and retain users against rivals. India’s massive 500-million-plus user base amplifies the impact, as the country cements its status as a key market.
On the business front, a real-time bidding system for marketing messages is in the works. Trials may kick off late 2026, with deployment in 2027, empowering companies to compete dynamically for customer outreach.
Backing this strategy, a February study highlighted social media’s sway: 77% of Indian retail buys stem from platform influence, Meta leading at 96% in discovery. Short videos fuel 97% daily consumption, claiming 60% of Facebook and Instagram time. Crucially, WhatsApp drives 72% of product discoveries via messaging.
As privacy concerns escalate, WhatsApp’s moves could redefine secure, efficient communication for billions.
