Odisha is set to make history by hosting the 2028 World Athletics Indoor Championships, a first for India. The World Athletics Council granted the rights on Thursday in Torun, Poland, where the 2026 edition is also underway from March 20-22.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi celebrated the news on X, calling it a ‘milestone’ that places Odisha on the world map. ‘The world is ready to witness Odisha’s love for sports,’ he posted, emphasizing the event’s return to India after over two decades. He praised the state’s unwavering dedication to sporting excellence and thanked PM Narendra Modi for his pivotal support.
Council delegates visited Bhubaneswar’s Kalinga Indoor Stadium in January and were thoroughly impressed by its facilities. AFI President Bahadur Singh Sagoo announced that the 2028 event will unfold at this state-of-the-art venue, solidifying Odisha’s role as India’s track and field powerhouse.
From hosting national championships to now international extravaganzas, Odisha’s sports infrastructure has evolved rapidly.
