Palamu, Jharkhand, is witnessing the profound impact of the Ayushman Bharat scheme, a flagship program offering Rs 5 lakh annual cashless coverage to millions. For the poor, it’s more than insurance—it’s hope amid medical crises.
The scheme’s success stories are pouring in from local hospitals. Families who once dreaded hospital visits due to costs now seek care without hesitation.
Take Shakir Alam’s family: post-delivery complications struck their newborn with a severe infection. Swift medical intervention followed, all covered under Ayushman. ‘This saved us from financial ruin,’ Shakir shared, estimating 70-80% savings and lauding the staff’s empathy. No bills have touched their pockets yet.
Dhananjay Vishwakarma’s son is another success case. ‘Money was always the barrier; now, it’s gone,’ he said, crediting the scheme for easing burdens on modest families.
Ravi Kumar, a hospital employee, observed a sea change. Patients who previously delayed treatment now receive prompt attention, turning despair into recovery.
Manish Tiwari, head of a private hospital association, confirmed 10 active Ayushman cases in his ward. Enrollment is simple—verify eligibility via Aadhaar, ration, or scheme card on the portal, and treatment begins gratis.
From routine surgeries to critical care like NICU, PICU, emergencies, and chronic disease management, the scheme covers it all. Tiwari emphasized how it prevents debt traps and asset sales, ensuring quality private healthcare reaches the grassroots level. This initiative is reshaping health equity in rural India.
