Eight years ago, ‘Raid’ stormed into theaters, blending fact and fiction to expose the underbelly of corruption in 1980s India. Ajay Devgn’s portrayal of a fearless tax sleuth turned the film into a box-office juggernaut and a fan favorite. On March 16, Devgn marked the occasion with an emotional Instagram post.
The actor shared a high-octane video from the film, captioning it: ‘Nothing escapes Amay Patnaik. Celebrating 8 glorious years of Raid.’ Fans responded with enthusiasm, sharing memories of the edge-of-seat drama that kept them hooked.
Directed by Raj Kumar Gupta, the movie is inspired by a real-life income tax raid in Kanpur. Devgn embodies Amay Patnaik, an upright officer targeting Rameshwar Singh, played masterfully by Saurabh Shukla. Tauji, as the character is known, rules through intimidation and amassed black wealth in cash and gold.
What starts as a routine raid escalates into a high-stakes battle. Tauji pulls political strings to halt the operation and even sends goons after Amay. The officer’s resilience and clever tactics ensure the raid’s completion, unearthing crores in undeclared assets.
‘Raid’ not only thrilled audiences but also earned acclaim for its authentic depiction of bureaucracy and bravado. Its commercial triumph paved the way for ‘Raid 2’ in 2023, featuring Devgn alongside Vaani Kapoor and Riteish Deshmukh.
Today, as the original clocks eight years, it stands as a testament to storytelling that informs and entertains. Devgn’s celebration revives interest in this modern classic, proving its timeless appeal in the thriller genre.
