Gujarat’s political circles are mourning the loss of BJP MLA Govind Parmar, who breathed his last at 82 in an Anand hospital on Friday after a prolonged illness. Representing Umreth in Anand district, Parmar was a towering figure in local politics.
News of his death triggered an outpouring of grief from BJP ranks and beyond, with tributes pouring in from across the state. Residents of Umreth and surrounding rural areas, whom he served selflessly, are particularly devastated.
Hailing from a simple background in 1943, Parmar left formal education after class seven to immerse himself in public life. Known for his earthy wisdom and rapport with villagers, he became synonymous with grassroots leadership in Charotar.
His electoral journey peaked in 2017 when he clinched Umreth by defeating Congress’s Kapilabai Chavda with 1,883 votes. Four years later, in 2022, he defended the seat emphatically against NCP rival Jayant Patel, securing victory with a 26,717-vote lead on 95,639 votes.
Reacting swiftly, BJP state chief Jagdish Vishkarma shared his condolences: ‘Devastated by the untimely demise of Govindbhai Parmar, Umreth’s beloved MLA. May his soul rest in peace, and his family find solace in this hour of grief.’
Parmar’s tenure was marked by tireless advocacy for rural development and community needs. Local BJP units held prayer meetings to honor the departed leader.
The vacancy in Umreth Assembly constituency now sets the stage for future political maneuvers. As tributes continue, Parmar’s indomitable spirit and service ethic remain an inspiration for aspiring politicians.
