Bangladesh cricket selectors have made bold calls ahead of their home ODI series against Pakistan, reinstating Litton Das, Nahid Rana, and Shariful Islam in the 15-member squad for the three matches kicking off March 11 at Mirpur.
Gazi Ashraf Hossain, the chief selector, explained the reshuffle as a response to middle-order vulnerabilities exposed in recent games. Multiple players failed to impress despite chances, prompting the comeback of seasoned campaigners like Afif Hossain, who’s carrying strong recent form, and Mahedi Islam Bhuiyan for another shot at proving himself.
Struggling Litton, winless in his last eight ODIs since late 2023, brings irreplaceable expertise from close to 100 caps. ‘His experience is invaluable, and he’s grinding with the coaches to regain top form,’ Ashraf noted. Meanwhile, Soumya Sarkar shines brightly on the international stage.
Injuries sideline pacers Hasan Mahmud (tennis elbow) and Tanjim Sakib (back issue), but recovery is anticipated by month’s end. The bowling attack leans on Mustafizur Rahman, Taskin Ahmed, and the recalled duo.
Squad list: Mehidy Hasan Miraz (captain), Soumya Sarkar, Saif Hasan, Tanjheed Hasan, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Towhid Hridoy, Litton Das, Afif Hossain, Mahedi Hasan Bhuiyan, Rishad Hossain, Tanvir Islam, Mustafizur Rahman, Taskin Ahmed, Shariful Islam, Nahid Rana.
As Bangladesh eyes a competitive edge, these returns could spark a revival, setting the tone for what promises to be a riveting rivalry.
