The city of Pune gears up for a spectacle of sticks and goals with the launch of the 41st PSPB Inter-Unit Hockey Tournament on Thursday at Major Dhyan Chand Hockey Stadium. Spearheaded by Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and overseen by Deepak Jain, Chief General Manager (Sports), this edition marks a historic shift: all games under floodlights for the first time.
PSPB’s flagship event brings together elite teams from BPCL, IOCL, ONGC, and EIL in a round-robin showdown. Defending champions BPCL, who triumphed last time under Olympian Devinder Walmiki’s captaincy, aim to retain their crown. IOCL finished as runners-up, setting the stage for intense PSU rivalries.
Action commences Thursday evening at 7:30 PM, with the grand finale slated for March 8 evening. This floodlit format, inspired by recent national women’s championships, promises edge-of-the-seat drama visible even after dusk.
Deepak Jain highlighted the tournament’s stature: ‘This championship has become a hallmark of institutional excellence in hockey, drawing the nation’s finest players. For BPCL, hosting in Pune is an honor that celebrates our national sport and underscores our dedication to nurturing talent at institutional and national levels.’
The event not only boosts hockey in Pune and PCMC but also spotlights stars like Tushar Khandkar, Devinder Walmiki, and Birendra Lakra. Expect tactical masterclasses, stunning goals, and the unyielding spirit of competition as these giants collide.
As floodlights illuminate the pitch, the 41st PSPB edition reaffirms hockey’s enduring passion in India, offering fans a front-row seat to history in the making.
