In a major push for Northeast India’s maritime ambitions, Union Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated three critical infrastructure projects on National Waterway-2 (Brahmaputra) in Dibrugarh today. The event highlights the government’s commitment to balancing economic growth with cultural heritage under PM Narendra Modi’s stewardship.
Key unveilings feature the Bogibeel Customs and Immigration Complex, Dhubri’s regulatory hub, and IWAI’s upgraded Heritage Building in Dibrugarh. Each facility is engineered for efficiency and integration.
Sonowal, speaking to enthusiasts, praised Modi’s model: ‘We’re advancing with development and heritage in tandem, preserving our roots, culture, and identity while driving progress.’ He portrayed the Brahmaputra as more than a waterway—it’s the region’s historical and future backbone.
The Bogibeel terminal innovates by merging tourism and cargo ops. Visitors and traders will find seamless customs, immigration, waiting areas, storage zones, admin spaces, staff quarters, and integrated security, enhancing NW-2 efficiency and facilitating Bangladesh-bound trade protocols.
Dhubri’s complex strengthens western Assam’s oversight, propelling import-export via waterways and cementing the city’s role as a trade portal to Bangladesh and Bhutan.
Back in Dibrugarh, the Heritage Building’s restoration marries tradition with modernity, fulfilling IWAI’s operational demands, spurring river cruises, and conserving architectural treasures.
Industry watchers predict these upgrades will revolutionize logistics chains, amplify connectivity, unlock tourism potential, and ignite business growth. Assam’s waterways are set to sail into a prosperous era, blending innovation with tradition.
