At the grand finale of the 6th Khelo India Winter Games’ second leg in Gulmarg, Union Sports Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya unveiled a roadmap to position the Kashmir gem as an international winter sports hub. The event drew over 900 young athletes from across 25 states and union territories, uniting the nation in the spirit of competition.
Dr. Mandaviya envisioned a future where Gulmarg rivals the world’s best winter destinations. ‘This land of Kashmir brims with possibilities,’ he said, committing central funds and expertise to realize this dream.
Breaking new ground, he announced extending the games to 15 days, weaving in tourism, cultural events, and multiple competitions including the Fit India Carnival. ‘No more short four-day events; we’re creating a holistic winter sports festival,’ the minister emphasized.
Reflecting on Jammu and Kashmir’s transformation, Mandaviya pointed to the shift from stone-pelting headlines to skiing stardom post-Article 370. Interactions with players and coaches at Khelo India centers revealed a burgeoning culture of excellence and harmony.
Tying into national goals, he elaborated on PM Modi’s developed India blueprint, targeting Olympic hosting in 2036 and top-five global sports status by 2047. The Khelo India initiative’s diverse formats have democratized sports access nationwide.
Further boosting infrastructure, a National Centre of Excellence for winter sports training will rise in the region. The newly launched Khelo Bharat policy prioritizes athletes, promising to nurture India’s next generation of champions.
