A grim scene unfolded at Kalyani’s JNM Medical College hostel in Nadia district, West Bengal, where authorities found the rotting corpse of final-year student Pulak Halder on Thursday. Hailing from South 24 Parganas’ Mograhhat, Halder’s body was in an advanced state of decomposition inside his locked room.
Police reports indicate the student was last sighted on February 20 at the hostel mess. For the next few days, he remained unseen by roommates or staff. The breakthrough came when a stench from his room prompted a forced entry, revealing the tragic sight.
Officers from Kalyani police station arrived promptly, transported the body for autopsy, and launched a detailed inquiry. While the cause of death is pending post-mortem results, possibilities including foul play or self-harm are under scrutiny. The family has been notified.
Unconfirmed reports point to bullying linked to RG Kar protests and academic stress as potential factors. Hostel mates confirmed Halder lived alone. Additional Superintendent Somjyoti Banerjee noted the sequence of events leading to the discovery.
In response, police have fortified security at the hospital premises. This heartbreaking episode underscores the urgent need for vigilance and counseling services in educational institutions, leaving the campus in shock and demanding answers.
