PERAVOOR, Kerala – Rahul Gandhi, Lok Sabha’s opposition chief, took direct aim at the Modi administration Thursday, charging it with prioritizing US trade demands over the welfare of India’s farmers.
Speaking at a large farmers’ congregation in Kannur’s Peravoor, Gandhi described farming as India’s foundational pillar. He cautioned against trade pacts opening doors to America’s industrialized mega-farms, which he said would wipe out local smallholders unable to match their scale and efficiency.
“Compelling our marginal farmers against these behemoths spells disaster for rural India,” he asserted. Gandhi broadened his critique, tying agricultural neglect to the government’s corporate-friendly financial strategies.
As Wayanad’s ex-MP, he delved into local woes like relentless wildlife attacks in highland areas. Calling it a multifaceted crisis, he demanded coordinated government responses, tech-driven solutions, and prompt relief for victims.
Eyeing state polls, Gandhi called on farmers to influence UDF’s election promises. He outlined commitments: enhanced MSP, better storage infrastructure, and rapid compensation for losses from weather or price crashes.
The event underscored a pivotal political choice, Gandhi said. Will policies empower elite global firms or protect the small farmers anchoring India’s food system and village economies? His words resonated deeply, igniting calls for accountability.
