Assam police scored a breakthrough in the Silchar Bypass gang rape case with the arrest of 25-year-old Nilotpal Das on Tuesday. The incident, reported on February 19, has sent shockwaves through Cachar district, where a woman was allegedly assaulted by a group of seven men while her partner was threatened with a knife.
Eyewitness accounts in the FIR describe the assailants arriving in an SUV, beating the couple, and subjecting the woman to repeated sexual assault. Das, from Tapovan Nagar, was identified by the victim from a photo and confessed to presence at the spot during questioning. However, he rejected involvement in the rape, alleging instead that his group extorted cash from parked couples.
Investigators uncovered a UPI transfer of Rs 10,000 linked to the crime, expanding the probe into extortion alongside sexual assault. SSP Parth Pratim Das emphasized a thorough examination of every aspect. ‘One accused is in custody, and we are closing in on another. Await the medical report and stay calm,’ he urged the public.
Amid rising outrage on social platforms calling for swift justice, authorities appealed for restraint against unconfirmed reports. As the probe deepens, the community awaits accountability in this heinous violation.
