Gujarat’s judo sensation Rohit Majgul (66kg) has punched his ticket to the 2026 Commonwealth Games and Asian Games after a stellar performance at the national selection trials in New Delhi. The 23-year-old from Talala in Gir Somnath district overcame tough opposition to emerge victorious.
In the best-of-three finals, Majgul faced off against Haryana’s Garvit. The match went down to the wire in golden score, with Majgul’s masterful O-goshi securing a waza-ari and the win. This qualification is no fluke—Majgul hasn’t lost a single bout in his last two senior national championships.
Scheduled for Glasgow from July 23 to August 2, the Commonwealth Games will see Majgul represent India alongside the Asian Games in Japan’s Aichi-Nagoya starting September 19. His success spotlights the Vijayi Bharat Foundation’s training excellence.
‘I always believed in my preparation and coaches,’ Majgul said post-victory. ‘This isn’t just my win; it’s a testament to the foundation’s hard work. Trials pushed my limits, but faith in training paid off.’
From humble tribal beginnings, Majgul’s journey reflects dedication. The foundation’s coaching staff has nurtured his talent, boosting Gujarat’s profile in judo. Nationally, this adds momentum to India’s medal hopes.
Historically, India struck bronze four times at the 1951 Asian Games in men’s categories. Poonam Chopra’s 1994 Hiroshima bronze stands as the only women’s medal. Majgul’s rise could herald a new chapter, with eyes now on rigorous preparations for global glory.
