Prime Minister Narendra Modi used the 131st episode of ‘Mann Ki Baat’ to praise Indian farmers for diversifying beyond traditional methods into new markets and cutting-edge practices. This progressive approach is enhancing yields and profitability nationwide.
A standout example came from Odisha’s Hirod Patel, a young agriculturist who revolutionized his family’s farm. Previously focused solely on paddy with his father Shiv Shankar, Hirod introduced a multifaceted system eight years back.
Over their pond, he erected a robust mesh framework for vine-grown veggies. The pond’s perimeter now features banana, guava, and coconut plantations, with fish rearing thriving underwater. This synergy of farming elements—grains, veggies, fruits, and fish—has optimized resources, saved water, and multiplied income streams.
PM Modi also highlighted Kerala’s Thrissur, where one farm nurtures an astonishing 570 rice varieties, blending indigenous, medicinal, and imported strains. This initiative safeguards biodiversity and seed heritage amid modern challenges.
The numbers tell the success story: India tops global rice production at more than 150 million tonnes yearly. Self-reliance achieved, the nation exports surplus, strengthening world food security. Modi’s platform continues to inspire grassroots innovation in agriculture.
