Fatehpur, Uttar Pradesh, witnessed a chilling double suicide that has sent ripples through the region. Just five months after tying the knot in a love marriage, Amarjeet Kushwaha and Rekha Sonkar ended their lives in quick succession, hanging themselves from the rooftop of their rented home in Bindki’s Barati Nagar neighborhood.
The sequence of events began in the dead of night between Thursday and Friday. Amarjeet, a 28-year-old son of Sitaram Kushwaha, first took his life around 1 AM inside a makeshift bathroom on the fourth-floor terrace, fashioning a noose from his muffler. Rekha, 25, found him and alerted authorities at the local police station. When officers reached the spot and forced entry, they retrieved his body while initiating legal formalities.
In a devastating turn, Rekha was nowhere to be found during this process. Searches below and around the building led to the grim discovery of her body nearby, suspended from a rope used for drying clothes, attached to the terrace railing. Police took custody of both bodies, conducted a detailed scene inspection, and dispatched them for autopsy.
The couple had been residing in the rented space for nearly a month after their union, which defied traditional family approvals. As Bindki Kotwali police delve into the matter, they are grilling relatives and locals for insights into potential domestic issues, financial woes, or external pressures that might have culminated in this sorrowful end.
This incident highlights the vulnerabilities faced by inter-caste or love marriages in rural India, where societal backlash can be severe. With forensic reports awaited, the probe aims to uncover the truth behind this poignant loss.
