In a bold display of recovery and resolve, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will launch the first phase of a rehabilitation township in Kalpetta on February 25. This initiative targets survivors of the deadly Mundakkai-Chooralmala landslides that ravaged Wayanad last year.
Vijayan shared his vision on social media platform X, calling it ‘Kerala’s tale of fortitude.’ He emphasized that the township inauguration symbolizes fulfilled commitments and collaborative rebuilding after profound loss.
The tragedy unfolded on July 30, 2024, when relentless monsoon rains caused hillsides to crumble in Mundakkai, Chooralmala, and nearby areas. The disaster led to significant casualties and widespread destruction, leaving communities in despair.
Undeterred by delays in central assistance, Kerala’s administration prioritized swift action. ‘We didn’t wait; we moved forward with our people’s strength,’ Vijayan noted.
Key highlights include handing over homes to 178 families alongside land titles. Full resettlement for all 327 affected families, complete with housing and property rights, is targeted before the upcoming monsoon. The project is in its concluding stages.
Vijayan reflected on the hurdles: numerous challenges tested their mettle, yet public support propelled them forward without falter. Far beyond mere structures, the township embodies human dignity, shared determination, and Kerala’s enduring power.
