In a decisive move ahead of student union polls, Patna Police swooped down on Patna University’s Minto Hostel late Wednesday night, hauling in eight students caught sloshed on liquor. The coordinated raid, under the command of DSP (Central) Bhanu Pratap Singh, responded to persistent complaints and pre-election jitters.
The university’s student union election nominations concluded the previous day, with a whopping 51 contenders in the fray for central panel seats: 16 presidential hopefuls, nine each for vice-president and general secretary, eight for joint secretary, and nine for treasurer. This surge in participation amplified the need for stringent oversight.
Acting on tips, Pirbahor police station teams fanned out across various hostels. The Minto Hostel yielded the biggest catch—eight youths visibly under the influence. Investigations now link some arrestees to an earlier bomb incident at the same station, slapped with Explosives Act provisions.
Speaking to reporters, DSP Singh highlighted the involvement of additional police units and noted one detainee’s prior criminal record. All confessed to consuming alcohol, prompting thorough questioning. With complaints piling up over months, this operation signals zero tolerance.
Campus-wide security stands reinforced, with ongoing hostel inspections promised. The administration’s watchful eye ensures no disruptions mar the democratic exercise. This crackdown serves as a stern warning to those undermining campus discipline during this crucial period.
