With Ramadan kicking off today in Delhi, a prominent AIMIM leader has sparked discussion by calling for a complete ban on alcohol sales across the city. Shoaib Jamei, head of AIMIM’s Delhi unit, made the request via a post on X, stressing public restraint during the fasting month.
‘Our appeal to the Delhi government: Close all liquor outlets in Delhi for the holy month of Ramadan. Impose restrictions on alcohol sales and consumption in public spaces,’ Jamei stated. He pointed to precedents like non-veg shop closures in Sawan, questioning why similar honors aren’t extended to Ramadan.
The lunar month, heralded by Jama Masjid’s Shahi Imam Syed Shaban Bukhari, sees devotees abstaining from food and drink during daylight hours. It’s a period rich in spiritual practices: nightly Taraweeh prayers, Quran completion, generous almsgiving, and communal iftars that unite families and neighbors.
Beyond personal piety, Ramadan promotes societal values like compassion and unity. Iftar feasts often include the underprivileged, while suhoor prepares fasters for the day ahead.
National figures have extended warm wishes. PM Modi posted, ‘Ramadan Mubarak. May this month enhance unity in our society and bring peace and prosperity everywhere.’ Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition, added, ‘Ramadan Mubarak. Wishing peace, prosperity, and good health to everyone.’
Jamei’s advocacy underscores tensions between secular policies and religious accommodations in multicultural Delhi. As the city observes the fast, this proposal tests the government’s commitment to harmony amid diverse traditions.
