Delays in Mumbai’s vital Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) flyover have triggered a hefty ₹50 lakh final fine from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) against the errant contractor.
During an on-ground assessment, Additional Commissioner Abhijit Bangar pinpointed lapses in the Dindoshi Court to Dadasaheb Phalke Chitranagari section under Phase 3(A). This 1.26 km flyover, complete with an elevated rotary, is designed to slash travel time across suburbs by navigating a 90-degree turn at Ratnagiri Junction Hotel.
The project, crucial for decongesting western-eastern routes, shows 75% completion: all 31 pillars up, 20/30 spans done. Pending work—final spans, beams, deck slabs, and ramps—must accelerate to meet the pre-monsoon target and May 31, 2026 opening.
Frustrated by the slow progress, Bangar mandated increased resources and the penalty. At the Chitranagari end, stormwater drains, sewers, and an Adani transformer obstruct access; swift relocation or reconstruction is ordered.
Bangar also toured the Goregaon twin tunnels’ launching shaft site. Measuring 200x50x30 meters, the excavation’s initial phase is complete, with cradle assembly underway. Heavy cranes (350 MT arrived, 800 MT incoming) will support TBM deployment for cutting-edge tunneling.
As Mumbai grapples with gridlock, BMC’s firm stance signals no tolerance for delays in transformative projects like GMLR, which promise safer, faster journeys for daily commuters.
