In a gesture of solidarity, President Emmanuel Macron of France began his official India trip by paying respects to the martyrs of the 26/11 Mumbai attacks. Accompanied by his wife Brigitte, the visit to the memorial site in Mumbai marked a solemn opening to what promises to be a packed agenda.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will host Macron for bilateral engagements focusing on defense pacts, Indo-Pacific strategies, AI innovations, and maritime ties. The three-day tour from February 17-19 is expected to yield significant outcomes in these vital areas.
A highlight will be the joint launch of the India-France Innovation Year 2026 event. The duo will speak to business tycoons, entrepreneurs, tech experts, and innovators, fostering deeper collaboration.
Macron will also join the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, reflecting shared priorities in artificial intelligence. His arrival was celebrated by state leaders, including Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis and Governor Acharya Devvrat, at the airport.
On social media, PM Modi welcomed his counterpart: ‘Excited for your arrival to elevate our bilateral relations. Our talks will bolster partnerships in all sectors for global growth.’ He signed off warmly, ‘Looking forward to meeting in Mumbai and Delhi, dear friend Emmanuel.’
Macron’s return to India – his fourth – follows visits in 2018, the 2023 G20, and 2024 Republic Day. Mumbai hosts him officially for the first time.
Rooted in a 1998 strategic pact, India-France relations thrive in defense deals, space ventures, energy projects, and tech advancements. The PMO anticipates a thorough assessment of these achievements, positioning this tour as a milestone for future endeavors.
